Hearts for Haiti

Hearts for Haiti is an apostolate of Sacred Heart Parish which is an education fund for the children of Fondwa, Haiti.

St. Antoine School

For the past decade  the generosity of Sacred Heart parishioners and others has brought hope to nearly 600 children annually at our "Sister School," St. Antoine in Fondwa, Haiti. By providing donations for teacher salaries, donors have brought the light of learning to a place where crippling illiteracy was once 85%.

Overcoming Great Challenges

In this region of subsistence, farming, where many live on a a dollar a day, education is esteemed as a path to a better life.  Many students are malnourished, lie in single-room homes, and walk hours each day for the privilege of attending class.

What impact has "Hearts for Haiti" had on the children of Fondwa?

Over the past decade, progress is visibly marked by he expansion of the school. St. Antoine is the only school in the region where children can start in kindergarten and go all the way through high school, a rare achievement for any school in rural Haiti.  In the past few years, the students have also earned high scores on the national exams.  Continued support of the teachers' salaries by "Hearts of Haiti" donors allows other school donors to focus their own efforts on projects like the daily lunch program, a water system and school reconstruction.

After the 2010 Earthquake

On January 12, 2010, Haiti's massive earthquake shattered the school building.  Fortunately, students and teachers escaped with their live.s  Rekindling the students' dream of an education, Fondwa leaders appealed for help in rebuilding. Assistance came. The teachers' support also continued, allowing reorganized classes to move forward in temporary structures while a new earthquake=resistant building took shape. At last, with hundreds attending, the beautiful new building was formally dedicated on January 10, 2014!

What Can I do to Help?
